About the Author
Hello again, Internet. Welcome to my author site. I’m Kevin Mooseles (which you should know already, considering the url).
You might be asking yourself, “What’s a Kevin Mooseles?” Well, let me explain. I’m the author of the apocalyptic adventure trilogy, ‘The Resistance is Dead‘. I was a regular features writer at Escapist Magazine for about four years. I’m also the great-grand-nephew of the first man to publish a graphic novel in Canada with speech bubbles.
I started my first fiction story when I was about 11 years old on an old Apple computer. The story was about a guy who was abducted by aliens and had to figure out how to escape the space ship and get back home safely. I never finished that story. For about four years I thought I would never finish my first novel trilogy, but I recently did, and that’s why this author page exists.
More ‘About’ below!
This site is being launched in April, 2024, but this is not my first rodeo. I had the author blog (it was theresistanceisdead.com back then). I did some podcast appearances and gave a couple of author interviews (at least one of them is still online). I wrote and promoted two books from 2016-2018, but the whole time I was building this career something felt off.
Around 2019, I decided to abandon my dream of building a writing career. When I made that decision, I did not think I would end up here one day. But here we are!
So, what was ‘off’, you ask? Well, when I started writing for the Escapist in 2014, I was concentrating on writing articles that would be well received and have broad appeal. I wasn’t thinking in terms of representing myself as a person. About four years later I was doing a podcast appearance on The Literate Gamer and during that show I told them that I’m a Christian. This was the sixth or seventh time I was on their show, and they were pretty surprised.
I realized then that I was a Christian ‘in the closet’. For four years I had left a trail of articles about Nine Inch Nails, and Fallout, and the way Order 66 in Revenge of the Sith was inspired by the ‘Night of the Long Knives’ in Nazi Germany. My first book involves a group of characters fighting off a zombie while out of their minds on LSD, for crying out loud. I know for a fact that there isn’t anybody else online with my name. For better or worse I was on the hook for everything I wrote, and none of it even hinted that I might be Christian.
I almost died in 2017 during a drive by shooting. That event made me start thinking more in terms of the waves I was making in life and the kind of representative of Christ I was being. My thinking shifted away from telling stories or writing articles that will get lots of readers, likes, and shares.
Then I got stuck and didn’t write anything for about four years. I go into more detail about all of this in my new book, Death is Not the End.
I understand that a guy like me being a Christian is a head scratcher, and I have come to accept the paradox of the situation. I’m not a preacher. I’m not an evangelist. I’m not a conventional Christian, by any stretch. However my faith is real, and it is an important part of my life.
I’m not interested in using my blog as a platform to “win souls for Jesus”. The way I see it, a lot of American Christians are so focused these days on enforcing a Christian Nationalist agenda on the rest of the country that they have consistently failed for years or even decades to consider whether they themselves are still following the teachings of Jesus or not. There is a war-like mindset of “us and them” that has poisoned the concept of general neighborliness on both sides of the fence, and that mindset deserves to be challenged. We can all do better than this.
What I am interested in, is being my authentic self and allowing the principles and teachings of the Bible to speak for themselves as I go about my life.
I’m pretty sure my new book will anger different people for different reasons, and that is acceptable to me. I didn’t write it to be liked, I wrote it to be honest.
I feel that it is important for people to understand that there is a big gap between modern religious traditions and the source material.
That being said, I will not be writing an explicitly Christian blog. Think of it more as a blog written by someone who is a huge nerd and also happens to be a Christian. Some posts will deal with Christianity, or the Bible, but not all of them.
I have several different blog posts I will be sharing in the future that delve more into the type of content I wrote while at Escapist Magazine. Fan theories and such. I am also working on a few other projects, such as a potential YouTube channel or podcast with my good friend, and fellow Resistance is Dead character, Reggie. Stay tuned for more updates, and happy reading!
